Session 1 Recap: Everything You Wanted to Know About Podcasting
#FCAAnnual looks a little different this year, but we are grateful to still be offering educational sessions for our members!
Podcasting has grown exponentially in recent years but does that mean that this communications strategy is right for your organization? Do you even know where to start?
Here are five key takeaways from the educational session: Everything You Wanted to Know About Podcasting But Were Afraid to Ask.
1. You must start with the who, what, when, where, and why
Who will do the work? Who is the listener?
What is the podcast about? What’s the format? Length? What resources are needed?
When will it publish? When does it end? When does the audience listen? When do they stop listening?
Where to record? Where to distribute? Where to find? Where does the audience listen?
Why is audio the right format? Why is this podcast different from others? Why should the audience listen and become devoted listeners?
2. The sweet spot for length is currently 30-45 minutes of content; the sweet spot for frequency is weekly.
3. Don’t be afraid to pivot if your original idea isn’t working and don’t be afraid to go for niche topics.
4. Podcasts are time consuming. To produce five, 30-minute interviews, you can expect to spend between 25-40 hours, possibly more.
5. Ron recommends listening to some existing podcasts to get familiar with the various podcast formats. Some of Ron’s favorites include:
All Fantasy Everything
Twenty Thousand Hertz
99% Invisible
Science Vs
Freakonomics
Planet Money

This wouldn’t be possible without the credible and resourceful speakers, thank you for your time and expertise!
